Located in the Garhwal Himalayan Range in the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. A vital part of the Chhota Char Dham Yatra, Kedarnath holds immense religious significance and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Kedarnath Temple can only be accessed via a trek from Gaurikund and remains open for six months, from April to November, due to heavy snowfall in the region during the rest of the year.
From November to May, the deity is shifted from Kedarnath Temple to Ukhimath for worship during the winter months. Kedarnath, known as "Kedar" – another name for Lord Shiva, the protector and destroyer – is believed to offer Moksha (salvation) to devotees.
Set amidst the snow-clad mountains near Chorabari Glacier and with the Mandakini River flowing in front, Kedarnath attracts thousands of pilgrims every year due to its spiritual significance and breathtaking natural beauty.
The current Kedarnath Temple is believed to have been reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya, though it was originally built by the Pandavas thousands of years ago using massive stone slabs placed over a large rectangular dais. The temple continues to be a major pilgrimage destination for devotees seeking blessings and spiritual solace.
